More than 3,700 babies were born with congenital syphilis in 2022 — 10 times more than a decade ago and a 32% increase from 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. The 2022 count was the most in more than 30 years, CDC officials said, and in more than half of the congenital syphilis cases, the mothers tested positive during pregnancy but did not get properly treated. The rise in congenital syphilis comes despite repeated warnings by public health agencies and it’s tied to the surge in primary and secondary cases of syphilis in adults, CDC officials said. It’s also been increasingly difficult for medical providers to get benzathine penicillin injections — the main medical weapon against congenital syphilis — because of supply shortages. Nearly 40% of last year’s congenital syphilis cases involved mothers who didn't have prenatal care, the CDC said.

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the oral contraceptive Opill for over-the-counter use, making it the first nonprescription birth control pill in the United States, but it will be months before it’s available. The typical combination birth control pill, the most commonly used form of oral contraception, uses both hormones to prevent pregnancy. “People use birth control for things outside of preventing pregnancy like [polycystic ovary syndrome], treating heavy periods, painful periods,” she said. “There’s a lot of uses for it outside of birth control that people also will benefit if they can get it over the counter.”Who can use Opill? The research sought to answer several questions about paternal participation in breastfeeding and the use of safe sleep practices for babies. And many could do more to support mothers who breastfeed, which can provide key health benefits for babies, the study indicated. The research also found racial disparities in sleep practices, with Black fathers less likely than White fathers to follow those practices. Overall, almost a third of the fathers involved in this survey did not receive enough or any advice about safe sleep practices, according to the study. Previous studies have suggested that fathers can play a key role in helping mothers breastfeed.

The Biden administration on Friday announced it would impose inflation penalties on 43 drugs for the third quarter of 2023, having fined 27 earlier this year, in a move it said would lower costs for older Americans by as much as $449 per dose. Drugmakers hiked the price of these 43 drugs by more than the rate of inflation and are required to pay the difference of those medicines to Medicare, the federal health program for Americans over age 65. "People taking 43 of these drugs could pay less (in coinsurance) to access these important treatments, starting July 1," Dr. Meena Seshamani, director for Medicare at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services told reporters. Biden announced in March that his administration would subject 27 drugs to inflation fines for the second quarter of this year. The new list of 43 replaces that selection for the third quarter of 2023.
